How are Essential Oils Extracted From Plants?

The increasing popularity of essential oils is likely to inspire future innovations in distillation of distilling oils from leaves, roots, resin, flowers, stems, bark, fruit, and rind: steam distillation, solvent extraction, and cold pressing.

Most essential oils are produced today by steam distillation. Steam forced into closed containers filled with plant matter forces the glands of the plants to rupture, releasing their oils. After an appropriate cooling period, the virgin oil flows through a valve or outlet into a waiting container.

Solvent extraction is a modern technique used for more delicate plant material that cannot tolerate steam distillation plants like Jasmine, Rose, and Orange Blossom. A floral absolute results from this two stage process.

Cold pressing is performed solely to obtain citrus oils. The outer layer of a citrus fruit--the peel--is pressed and filtered to yield fragrance oil.

What are "Pure" Essential Oils?

A pure essential oil is one that has not been diluted with chemicals or artificial substances of any kind. It is the oil of a particular plant that remains untouched and unchanged--just as it was right after the distillation process.

While many companies sell perfumed oils or oils that are only "commercial grade" or less, Newyas uses pure essential oils with the highest potential therapeutic quality--oils that can be used with confidence. This is our promise.

How Do I Use Essential Oils?

One of the most enjoyable ways to use essential oils is to diffuse them in your home or office. A powerful whispering jet of cool air continuously atomizes a few drops of essential oil in a jet nebulizer, sending a light bouquet of fragrant vapor wafting through the air. The pure oil vapor maintains its desirable properties and remains even after the diffusion session is finished.

Neways' pure, unadulterated Essential Oils should never be applied to the skin undiluted (neat). Although most aromatherapists generally agree that certain oils, such as oil of lavender or tea tree, can be safely used neat, we strongly recommend that all first-time users dilute every oil before use with a carrier oil. Please refer to the Responsible Cautions section before you use any essential oil.

Can Essential Oils Be Used With the Other Neways Products?

The simple, natural state of a non-greasy Essential Oils allows them to blend perfectly with all Neways fragrance-free products. Feel free to create custom blends unique to your own personal care needs and preferences. Each blend you create can then be individual and unique, just like you are.

You might choose, for example, to mix an oil or a blend of oils into Neways Refresh fragrance-free bath gel to produce an aromatic gel suitable to your tastes. Try mixing three or four drops of oil with a quarter-sized portion of Refresh on your bath brush, washcloth, sponge, or loofah. A mix of Lavender and Orange may help you feel invigorated after your morning shower. Eucalyptus might support the body's effort to address a stuffy nose or help ease congested lungs. Remember that only a few drops of pure essential oil are needed to help create a refreshing, aromatically enhanced bath.

Putting three or four drops of Lavender on a washcloth in your clothes dryer gives your clothing a fresh, natural scent. You can even add four or five drops of Orange to your dishwasher for a fragrant, fresh wash.

Responsible Caution

• Essential Oils should always be applied with the Mixing Oil or Tangible Massage lotion
• Never put Essential Oils into the eyes or ears. If you accidentally do, consult your health care practitioner. Your health care practitioner may suggest that you dilute with vegetable oil, NEVER RINSE THE AREA WITH WATER. Water forces the oil deeper into the tissues.
• Do not use Essential Oils internally.
• Some oils are photosensitive. Do not expose your skin to direct sunlight when applying citrus oils.
• Consult your health care practitioner before using Essential Oils during pregnancy. Never use the oils of basil, sage (an estrogen), clary sage, fennel, peppermint, or geranium during pregnancy.
• People with high blood pressure should avoid using the oils of hyssop, wild rosemary, sage, and thyme. Oil of wild rosemary may aggravate asthma in some people.
• Oils of fennel, hyssop, wild rosemary and all types of sage oil should be avoided if you have epilepsy.
• Store Essential Oils in a cool place and out of direct sunlight.
